How Keyless Remotes Work

How Keyless Remotes Work For many of us, keyless entry remotes are a godsend. They allow us to get in our cars quicker in inclement weather. When our hands are full, they make it easier for us to open out trunks so we can unload our packages. Those of us with children can appreciate them too because when we’re trying to carry bags and a squirming child, we can open our cars without having to fumble around for our keys. We rely on our keyless entry remotes every day. So during any of the times that you’ve used yours, have you ever wondered how it actually works? Inside of your keyless entry remote, there is a small radio transmitter and a controller chip. Inside of your car there is a unique receiver chip. Once you push a function button on your keyless remote, a special 40-bit transmitter code and a function code is sent to the receiver. The receiver chip has a memory location which holds the same 40-bit codes. When the transmitter code and receiver code synchronize, the function you requested occurs. If you’re worried about thieves stealing your transmitter codes and breaking into your car, don’t. In the early days of keyless entry remotes, thieves could use radio scanners to capture keyless remote codes and later use them to break in to cars. This was especially possible if a remote transmitter sent out a single signal. Today’s keyless remotes use 40-bit rolling code. Rolling code is used to randomly generate transmission codes so they can’t be captured by would-be thieves. A 40-bit rolling code can actually generate around one trillion possible codes. Knowing that should make you feel much safer. Did you know that it’s actually possible to desynchronize your keyless remote? Now, if you accidently hit your remote by mistake when you’re not by your car, your remote should still be ok. Your keyless remote compensates for this by accepting any of the next 256 possible valid codes generated at random. Now if you just so happen to hit the remote 257 times in a row, your receiver will probably stop working.
